A handsome pair of what we assume is a bowling ball and a pin. Without the pin, the wooden orb might simply be considered a globe. Together they make an impressive pair of bookends. Eye-catching on a bookshelf, given their provenance, they would have a story to tell. The acrylic base for the ball was added after the auction and did not come from the estate. The laminated wood pin is approximately 15." The ball has some cracks and appears to have been turned from a single block of wood. It may or may not have begun life as a bowling ball. It is about 8" across. Judging from the number of pieces in his collection, Sondheim seems to have had an appreciation of the warmth and aesthetics of wooden pieces. These two pieces were part of lot 59 in Doyle's June 18, 2024 auction of the Collection of Stephen Sondheim. The pieces will come with a certificate of authenticity indicating the auction date and lot number.
